HANDPAN PLAY LAB: First Touch Workshop + Acoustic Improv Jam
Date: Saturday, July 27th
Time: 6:00 - 8:00PM
“Interactive Wind Chime. Sound Sculpture. Sonic Spaceship.”
These are a few ways people describe the handpan, an instrument that was shaped into reality in 2000. Today’s event is a two part experience that blends education, hands-on learning & active play.
6–7:15p • Handpan Workshop
7:15–7:25p • Reset, bathroom breaks
7:25–8p • Acoustic Improv Jam (if weather is nice, we’ll go outside)
8p • Event concludes
During the Handpan Workshop we’ll:
Learn about the history & anatomy of the handpan
Discover our unique touch
Explore basic rhythms & patterns
Try different styles of play (including vocalizing with)
Discuss “Musical Conversation”
Lastly, we’ll open the space for a brief Q&A
Afterwards, it’s time to “let loose & have some fun” with our remaining time together in an Acoustic Improv Jam. During this time, we’ll open the space for a loosely structured/guided acoustic jam, where participants are encouraged to play together. Don’t worry, this is a beginner friendly space, and our intention is to focus on fun, connect to peace through music, hang out, dance & frolic, or sit back, relax and enjoy the space & commUNITY!! There will be handpans, tongue drums, djembes & percussion instruments available. Feel free to bring an acoustic instrument for playing (guitar, ukulele, mandolin, violin, didgeridoo, etc). Join the fun, and let's see what kind of music magic happens!!
Some handpans, drums & rattles will be available to share
Music experience is not necessary to play & have fun!!
BYO instruments, snacks, & water!!
Weather:
If the weather is nice, we’ll be outside under the trees (bring a blanket and comforts).
If it’s icky & sticky or wet & wild, we’ll be inside!!
Please arrive comfortably. There will be chairs available during class for seated handpan playing. Please bring water for hydration, a notepad and pen/pencil for taking notes during the workshop, and extra layers to accommodate while in an indoor learning space.
For the Acoustic Improv Jam, bring any comforts for outdoor music play – chair, blanket, bug spray, etc.
